Mapungubwe National Park
Remains of a wall and a pile of rocks that was used to defend the route to the summit of Mapungubwe Hill.
Capital of the earliest known kingdom in sub-Saharan Africa that flourished from 900AD to 1300AD, very little remains of this ancient African civilization. Remains of a wall and a pile of rocks that was used to defend the route to the summit of Mapungubwe Hill. The original route, a steep rock scramble which was easily protected in case of an attack, has been replaced by a wooden staircase. The king and his family lived on the summit while the rest of the village lay around the hill.
