A small camelthorn tree below a big red sand dune
The camelthorn tree (Acacia erioloba, Kameeldoring, Mokala) is a thorn acacia native to the drier parts of Southern Africa. Its preferred habitat is deep sandy soils and is found all over Namibia including the Namib Desert. The wood has many uses, which has led to the trees being depleted and the camelthorn is now a protected species in Namibia and may not be damaged, cut or chopped. The Sand dunes at Sossusvlei are the tallest dunes in the world.
