I am forever drawn to things that are past their conventional prime. The other morning I needed to go to town so I decided to beat the traffic and walk up Lion's Head just after sunrise for breakfast. I didn't make it to Lion's Head; the traffic starts earlier than I realised, and while it certainly wasn't at peak, I didn't feel like sitting in it at all, so I parked and followed a little sign pointing along a footpath to Kirstenbosch and wandered around the gardens, which I never do as I'm usually just passing through to or from the mountain. It was utterly delighful to wander completely aimlessly, simply taking in what came to my senses - which were all engaged! In the forest, next to a stream, I found this delicate skeleton of a leaf, with its intricate beauty, to me, emphasised and enhanced in death.
